The Ice is Out! Officially declared: Wednesday, April 23rd, at 2:10PM
April 22nd, 2014
No ice in sight. But no ice out declaration.
April 19th, 2014
The ice migrated south for Easter. Movement is a good thing. A clear sign of instability and weakness.
The fisherman are on the lake. A welcomed sign. The ice is out half way across the bay, but it carries some girth. Reports of 6 inches thick.
April 17th, 2014
The Broads are open. It should be a matter of days until this bay clears out.
April 16th, 2014
And you thought winter was over. The ice looks like it grew overnight, but it is just the north wind moving the ice south. Notice the hole toward the middle of the bay.
April 15, 2014
A heavy, driving rain is eating away at the ice. A predicted re-freeze tonight might slow things back down.
April 14, 2014
70 degree temperatures and a wicked south wind blew the ice out of the marina and to the end of the gas dock. Things are progressing rapidly.
We seem to be 5 days ahead of the 2001 Ice-out (May 2nd Ice-out). Based on this inexact science, the ice should go out on April 27th. Stay tuned.
April 11, 2014
The melt is accelerating! Notice the darkening of the ice. The Marina will start launching next week.
April 10, 2014
The continued strong run-off is creating separation from the docks.
April 9, 2014
Heavy run-off has created some open water around river and stream inlets. It is not much, but it is a start!
April 4th, 2014
It won't be long now! Just kidding. The wait will be long. Very long.
Remember the good old days when "Global Warming" was a hot topic? No talk like that around here this Spring. In case you haven't been outside in about 3 months, you should know by now we are buried in ice and snow. Readings of 30 inches of ice were reported within the last week. Now if we work off one inch a day for the next 30 days, that will take ice out into May for the first time since 2001.
Here is what the ice looks like today:

Here is what it looked like on this day the last time the ice went out in May:
April 7, 2001
We had more snow in 2001, but thicker ice this year. Unless we have a tropical Spring you can expect a late April early May Ice Out. The Old Man of the Lake says, "Get ready to wait. Ice out May 2nd. You can bet your boat on it."
Here is what the ice looked like on this day for the last 4 years:
